Seasonal British produce in July is brimming with colour and goodness. From deep green spinach leaves packed with micronutrients to ruby red currants bursting with Vitamin C. You will be richly rewarded with seasonal gems such as apricots, gooseberries and wet garlic.
Our philosophy when it comes to food is pretty simple: inspired globally, grown locally. There’s a whole selection of Mediterranean style vegetables, try them with grilled Huxley “squeaky cheese” from the brilliant Book and Bucket. Or make your own local ingredients tapas with tortilla, patatas bravas and a platter of Engish charcuterie. Read our blog for tips on where to buy the best English charcuterie.
Pinot Noir from England can vary in style depending on the producer, vintage and region. See our tasting notes from the 2020 vintage to find the style that’s right for you. Summer is a busy time for fishing fleets. The weather is usually calm and the warmer waters bring a wide variety of fish closer to shore. Where you live will determine what fish you can buy locally and sustainably. For example, Plaice is a good bet across the whole of the UK this time of year. However, it’s only in the warmer shores of the south and south west that it’s possible to find John Dory and rare bream species.
Excellent quality British chicken, beef and pork are easily found in supermarkets all year round. You can also pick up rabbit and farmed venison from most butchers any time of the year. Wood pigeon may also be available all year round, as it has no gaming season. As such, it’s a good option if you like wild meat.
It is of course BBQ season. But if you are not keen on that chargrilled flavour, then try a summer roast. By that we mean roast the meat and serve with salad, salsa verde and new potatoes as an alternative to traditional roast trimmings.
